No trip to Kenya is complete without at least one safari to one of the amazing national parks the country has to offer.
The Turtle Bay Discovery Team can organise just about any safari you would like to do (although please note that guests booking with a tour operator should book these with their Representative).
Below are some of the most popular:
No park in Kenya compares with the vast wilderness of Tsavo East. At about 11,000km2, it is the biggest park in Kenya. Tsavo is famous for its large herds of elephant and its vast rolling plains with dry, scrubby vegetation support a variety of wildlife and birdlife.
This safari can be done by road direct from Turtle Bay Beach Club and safaris as short as one night are common, although we recommend you savour more of what Tsavo has to offer with a two-night or longer stay.
Located on the south Kenya coast, Shimba Hills is a cool rainforest reserve and the only place in Kenya you can see the elegant Sable Antelope. At 250km2 Shimba is a small reserve of patchy rainforest interspersed with woodlands and small open grasslands. In addition to the Sable Antelope, Shimba is also home to buffalo, waterbuck, bushbuck, elephant, baboon, and Sykes’, Vervet and Colobus Monkey.
Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary was launched in the early 90s as a community conservation project, to help the local people and to reduce the human/wildlife conflict. At 60,000 acres you have an excellent chance to see elephant as well as other wildlife, birds and cycads, pre-historic plants, which are endangered and protected in Mwaluganje.
Shimba Rainforest Lodge is the only tree hotel on the Kenya coast and the best choice for accommodation around Shimba. All rooms are twins and have a balcony overlooking the waterhole. The rooms are small but comfortable and guests share clean bathrooms constructed tastefully in wood and stone.
A wooden walkway extends 120 metres into the rainforest with a view point to watch out for mammals, birds and other wildlife. The dining room and bar are open-air overlooking the floodlit waterhole.
